Name: Amelia Susan Bones
Title: Deputy Head of the DoMLE
History: The oldest of four children, Amelia was raised in the Bones family's ancestral home in Wiltshire. The Boneses were and still are pureblooded, but not terribly well-to-do; they have a long history of public service with the Ministry and have worked alongside Ministers of Magic even when it was in their best interests to do otherwise. Amelia's father, Charles Bones, was the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. He expected at least one of his children to follow in his footsteps and was quite pleased when Amelia expressed an interest at a very young age. She was a girl for whom taking responsibility and obeying rules came naturally -- a much-needed trait when her brothers and sister ranged from five to fifteen years younger than her.
Amelia was Sorted into Hufflepuff in 1950 and was a model student, becoming a prefect in 1955 and Head Girl in 1957. By that time her father had retired from the Ministry to pursue a life of leisure in Wiltshire, but he had enough friends and contacts to get his eldest a good job in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. She studied the laws and policies, and quickly proved why despite her sharp mind, she had been made a Hufflepuff instead of a Ravenclaw for a reason. A stubborn streak reared its head. Stickler for rules that she was, Amelia believed in strict interpretations and strongly disapproved of bending or breaking laws. This meant that she butted heads with her coworkers on more than one occasion, but that didn't stop her rise through the ranks; there have been Boneses in the Ministry since time began, after all, and while she may not have been particularly savvy in the political arena, Amelia did believe in department loyalty.
One of the people Amelia butted heads with was Bartemius Crouch, the very man who would become her boss. Although she had no love of Death Eaters and was just as fearful as anyone else in the Ministry, she fought tooth and nail to prevent him and other members of her department from granting Aurors broader powers. It wasn't that she disapproved of these methods, but she believed in going through proper channels. To members of other departments, she presented a perfectly agreeable face and followed her superiors' orders. Within the DoMLE, however, she attempted to hold the middle ground against two different extremes. At about the same time, her younger brother Edgar started talking about working around the Ministry completely, dropping hints that he was involved in something completely outside his sister's jurisdiction. Amelia just gritted her teeth and held onto her strict interpretation of the legal system.
In 1978 she was appointed Deputy Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, possibly because she was the only person detested by liberal and conservative factions alike. Since then she has tried to keep her new boss, the selfsame Mr. Crouch, from doing anything that would seriously undermine the laws she considers akin to sacred texts. She is a moderate -- and well aware that in the current political climate, she is very much alone.
Personality:
When Amelia began working at the Ministry she was a liberal. Now she is a moderate, and by the time she retires she'll be a bookbound conservative. This is because she believes in following the rules instead of innovating. Her sense of justice is very wrapped up in what is codified and on paper. Just because she doesn't agree with a law doesn't mean it can be ignored. Non-confrontational by nature, she nevertheless holds her ground on issues that really concern her; many a coworker has been startled by quiet, amiable Amelia descending on them like a Fury for daring to go around the legal system. Above all else, she is scrupulously fair and applies the laws evenly to everyone, regardless of wealth, blood, or status. It's the only legal thing to do.
